The Blanket of the Hills

Among Sicilian hills scented with thyme and rosemary, a magic blanket made of fragrance wraps a tired child with the protection of nature.

The Sicilian hills were covered with thyme, rosemary, wild fennel, and low stones warmed by the sun.

In the evening they turned soft and purple.

Luca had spent the whole day walking with his family. He had climbed, asked questions, slipped once, laughed twice, and carried a small stick as if it were a treasure. Now he was tired.

“I cannot walk anymore.”

His mother sat beside him on a stone.

“Then listen to the hills.”

At first Luca heard only insects and wind. Then the thyme released a sweet scent. The rosemary added a stronger one. The fennel gave a green, fresh breath.

The scents wove together in the air.

Slowly they became a blanket.

Not one you could see completely. A blanket made of smell, warmth, and evening. It settled over Luca’s shoulders without weight.

“Who is covering me?”

“The hills,” said his mother.

Luca closed his eyes. The blanket did not carry him home, but it made him feel protected enough to rest. He leaned against his mother and breathed the herbs.

The stones kept the last warmth of the day. A cricket began to sing. Far away, a dog barked once and then stopped.

After a while Luca stood up.

“I can walk now.”

He still felt tired, but not alone. The hills had wrapped him.

That night, in bed, he remembered the fragrant blanket. When the room felt too dark, he imagined thyme, rosemary, warm stones, purple sky.

And nature returned, gently, to cover his dreams.

Moral: Nature knows how to wrap us gently.
Montessori note: After reading, invite the child to remember one concrete gesture from the story and connect it gently with the feeling of the evening.
